Family and friends grieving after deadly crash

INDIO, California (February 8th, 2016) – A family has been devastated after a collision with a semi-truck took the life of their 56-year-old mother of four on Sunday morning, reported The Desert Sun.

Early reports indicated Maria Hortensia Vera, 56, of Palm Desert, was trapped inside her overturned Volkswagen Jetta when it was struck by a big rig that drove through a closed portion of the road. (map)

At this point in time, it is unclear how the Volkswagen became overturned, however, Vera and her son and daughter – Axel and Axa Vera – survived the initial crash.

Emergency medical personnel arrived to render aid and extricate the mother from the vehicle. It was during this time that a truck driver failed to follow the safety cones and slammed into the Jetta. Tragically, the victim – a beloved family woman – died at the scene.

Axel and Axa escaped any further harm from the semi-truck collision. The 53-year-old driver of the truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

According to The Desert Sun, the most common violation committed by truckers is exceeding their 55-mph speed limit. The second most common violation is driving outside the right lane when they’re not using a left exit or passing a slower vehicle. Speeding and unsafe turns are the cause of most big rig crashes in California.

At The Seegmiller Law Firm, we extend our sincerest condolences to the Vera family and friends. The thoughts and prayers of our staff are with them during this difficult time. A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family to help pay for funeral and burial expenses.
